We're set for Wednesday, October 19th, 5:30pm at Washoe Medical for Dr. Jennifer Mahon, who will be discussing Intercultural Communications in the workplace.

Our annual Wine Tasting event is set for Wednesday, November 16th at Sage Creek Grill and Taproom.

Our very special event this Fall will be: "Proving Worth - Business Acumen for HR and Training Professionals." It will be held at IGT from 1- 5pm on December 8th, hosted by Mr. Chuck Shields. (More details to come, like Web site registrations, pricing, etc.)

Stay tuned for a special meeting email blast as we get closer to both dates, and specific directions and details on our Web site!

    President's Message from Chris Champagne

I think I'm experiencing some kind of strange "time dilation" effect, because September's already gone, I just gave my UNR students their first test, and I'm still pondering my Burning Man experience and summer time! Where did it all go? (Well, maybe I'm feeling that way because Fall is so busy. I've got lots to tell, and I'll try to keep it brief...)

I'm back in the Army, navigating the bureaucracy; yours truly has landed himself a Training slot in the 1st Brigade of the 91st Division in California, Camp Parks in Dublin, to be more precise. U.S. travel only, a weekend a month and two weeks in the summer. That's a lock. So I'll just be a bit busier than I am now, but I'm not so worried about being called out to guard a check point in Iraq!

The Mailer is almost upon us! Membership renewal, bylaw changes, rate changes, Board Slate, surveys, etc., all in a handy dandy self-addressed return envelope. So get a glass of wine, a Number 2 pencil, fill it out when you get it, and our chapter won't collapse into a disorganized heap.

Lastly, December 8th's 1-5pm "Proving Worth" seminar with Mr. Chuck Shields is on at IGT, so save the date and look for more details in coming emails. We're very excited about this event.

That's the big stuff. Looking forward to seeing you all soon!

    Chris

    Book review
Execution - The Discipline of Getting Things Done by Larry Bossidy and Ram Charan (with Charles Burck)

Bossidy and Charan have excellent track records for leadership and theory, and this collaboration of theirs is meant to be a snap shot of "how to get it done" in a company.

    • Execution is a discipline, and integral to strategy.
    • Execution is the major job of the business leader.
    • Execution must be a core element of an organization's culture.

This is the central thrust of the book, and then they break down what they mean by these three points, and then detail how a company can begin to realize that cutlure of execution. It's a play book, and a fast read.

I will say there is very little in this book that is "new." However, often the simplest things are hard to master. Below are the steps of "Building Block #1 - The Leader's Seven Essential Behaviors."

    1. Know your people and your business.
    2. Insist on realism.
    3. Set clear goals and priorities.
    4. Follow through.
    5. Reward the doers.
    6. Expand people's capabilities.
    7. Know yourself.

Obviously not a scorching new list of positive traits we look for and expect in leaders, but each building block chapter breaks down a process into executable steps, ... and that is what this book is all about. Doing.

Laid out as a simple blueprint to guide any organizational leader in the direction that links people, their behaviors and the bottom line. And at the end of the play, the ball is either across the goal line, or it is not. Plans are great, plans are necessary, ... but we can all see when things are not executed correctly. (Hopefully every state governor and FEMA official will go buy a copy and start implementing the process now, instead of pointing fingers at each other when things go sideways.)

A few folks are looking at the open DAL positions, but these are the firm names we have so far. The Board can always use more volunteers and committee members, so if you want to get more involved, let us know! (We're getting ready for our annual Board Retreat in November, where the new Board officers are introduced to the well-oiled machine that is the Sierra Nevada Chapter. Everyone is invited to that event, (and any other Boad meeting), so more on that next month...)
